SharePoint 2013: Work Management Service & Error „Sorry, we’re having trouble refreshing your tasks. Contact your administrator if you continue to have problems“

Problem

If you go to your My Task site and try to refresh your task list you see the following error message after the atempt to sync the tasks: “Sorry, we’re having trouble refreshing your tasks. Contact your administrator if you continue to have problems”.

Solution

  1. Does a Work Management Service Application exist?
    You can check this if you open the SharePoint 2013 Management Shell and type Get-SPServiceApplication.
    If it does not exist, you have to create one. This can be done via Central Administration.
  2. Is the Work Management Service running. Check this in the CA à Manage Services on Server
  3. Does an User Profile Service Application exist and is it running?
  4. Has the service account under which the Work Management Service is running Full Control permissions to the User Profile Service Application? (CA à Manage Service Applications à mark the User Profile Service Application à click on Permissions in the Ribbon à grant the service account Full Control)

    If you don’t know the service account open the SharePoint 2013 Management Shell and type the following commands:

    $sa = Get-SPServiceApplication | where {$_.DisplayName –match “Work Management”}

    $sa.ApplicationPool

    The ProcessAccountName is the service account which is used by the Work Management Service.

    If the service account doesn’t has the right permissions you will find the following message in the ULS Log:

    01-27-2014 07:46:42.85    w3wp.exe (0x13B8)    0x13FC    SharePoint Portal Server    Work Management Service    ahw65    Medium    Cannot get user profile because we cannot connect to User Profile service.
